Are you planning a trip with a large group of friends or family and trying to decide where to stay in Puerto Rico? While hotels may seem like the traditional choice, have you considered renting a luxury property instead? Hotels were long the safe choice, but with the improvements in technology, and extensive offering available through platforms and directly, they are worth taking a new look.

Here are just a few reasons why a luxury property might be the better option for your large group:

More space and privacy

One of the biggest benefits of renting a luxury property is the extra space and privacy it affords. Hotel rooms can feel cramped and crowded with a large group, but a luxury property allows everyone to spread out and have their own space. Having a private common area to socialize – play games, watch TV, or just chat with friends is often not available in a hotel. You also have a fully equipped kitchen where you can cook meals together, whether you are looking to balance healthy options, have picky eaters, or want to save money versus going out every meal.

You can also get a lot more space per person in a house, compared to a hotel.  You can spread out your luggage, have an area to stretch, and separate bedrooms for everyone to retreat to at the end of the day. You’ll actually want to spend time at your accommodations, which is saying a lot! Especially in Puerto Rico, you can get private outdoor space for alfresco dining and to spend the most time outdoors, in order to enjoy the amazing weather.

Better value for money

With a large group, the cost of booking multiple hotel rooms can quickly add up. However, a luxury property often offers better value for money.  For example, let’s say you have a multi generational group that has 10 people and needs 4 hotel rooms.  For similar quality accommodations, you could compare a $200/night hotel room to a $800/night house(including all fees), since you need 4 rooms. Keep in mind when comparing fees that many hotels add on fees and taxes at check-out, and while platforms include a cleaning fee, they are typically an all-inclusive process once you agree to the booking.

In most areas, you can get MUCH better accommodations at a house. If you plan to use any of the extra space, a luxury short term rental is a far better choice. You’ll get more square footage, higher quality finishes, and access to luxury amenities such as a pool, hot tub, or outdoor grill.

We only recommend looking into hotels compared to short term rentals under three conditions:

    • In areas where short term rentals are prohibited or limited, prices can be very high

    • Shorter stays – hotels really make sense for shorter stays where the cleaning fee is significant relative to your overall stay.  Hotels can offer a better alternative due to having many rooms together and can offer cleaning at a lower cost. It’s much faster and easier to clean a 400 sq ft hotel room without a kitchen than a full apartment or home.

    • When traveling alone or with just two people, it may also make sense to stay at a hotel, as you may not value the extra private space.  Additionally, some activities may be less attractive with 1-2 people, such as large cook-outs or get-togethers for board games.

West Puerto Rico tends to attract a lot of larger groups and longer stays, with few limitations on short term rentals(except in residential neighborhoods).  The combination of longer stays and bigger groups makes it a perfect place to look at short term rental / tourism options!

More flexibility and control

Renting a luxury property also gives you more flexibility and control over your vacation experience. You’ll have the freedom to come and go as you please, and you won’t have to worry about strict hotel policies or crowds. You won’t have other guests making noise when you try to sleep, or some event at the hotel blocking your ability to use any of the facilities. Additionally, if you are renting large equipment for water activities, it can be safely stored at the luxury property.

Plus, you’ll have access to a fully equipped kitchen, which means you can cook exactly what you want to eat, at whatever time of day you prefer. Do you have picky eaters or just want a break from local cuisine? Whether you have allergies, or just want to relax at home, having the option to make some of your own meals is a great perk. Or, even hire a private chef to come cook and serve a full private dining experience in the comfort of your luxury rental. No need to go out and deal with overcrowded restaurants and slow service!

True luxury property managers will go out of their way to make sure you have all your needs met before and during your stay.  Whether this means purchasing additional supplies prior to your arrival, or connecting you with local services such as chefs, masseuse, transportation, or local guides to do some of your favorite activities, they go above and beyond. They typically have partnerships with some of their favorite providers, and with a significant presence in the area, they really do know what’s best! While high end hotels’ concierge might help with this, you can get this luxury experience at a better value than booking multiple high end hotel rooms.

Home away from home

A luxury property can feel like a home away from home, which can be especially comforting when you’re traveling with a large group. You’ll have your own space where you can relax and unwind, and you’ll have all the comforts of home such as a washer and dryer.

When you are going to the beach frequently and you are in Puerto Rico for an extended period, being able to wash and dry clothes is a huge plus. Towels and clothes get damp, sandy, and really need a quick clean to feel fresh! It also allows you to pack a little lighter, which makes a more enjoyable experience for all, especially if you’re staying for an extended period or have delicate clothing.

We find that most people come to stay for a week or more, and that is the perfect amount of time to see the attractions and feel at home in your luxury rental property. It takes a couple days to get acclimated and then you are rolling like it was your own home. Because you have a private and unique space, unlike a generic and uninspired hotel, you can create truly memorable experiences with family and friends!

Exclusive locations

In Puerto Rico, many luxury properties are at exclusive locations that are not also available to hotels. Whether this is beach front, cliff front, or some secluded area in the countryside, it is common that those locations are only available as a luxury rental property.

This is especially true on the west side of the island, where there are even fewer hotel options. Many properties were passion projects of previous owners, or truly luxurious locations built to suit perfect rental properties. As you walk through the properties, you can feel the passion and vision of those who built it. While you might find some offerings for hotels, truly unique luxury properties are one of a kind.  As you are perusing the many options, just know that each property can be a once in a lifetime opportunity to live in a really cool spot for a week!

So, if you’re planning a trip with a large group and want more space, privacy, value for money, flexibility, and the comforts of home, consider renting a luxury property instead of booking multiple hotel rooms. You’ll be glad you did!
